Both main characters are well-rounded and both Naef’s character development and the romance felt very realistic. The story is an Eros and Psyche and Beauty and the Beast retelling, and I don’t think I can even begin to express how much I loved every single thing about it. The writing perfectly matches the protagonist and narrator: Naef/Knife is a disabled boy that hates the world. That’s truly the best adjective I could find to describe the writing style: it won’t spare you any details (good or bad) and it won’t be nice.

The story is told in a first PoV perspective and it’s extremely raw. When I started it, the first thing that caught my attention was the writing. I went into it knowing next to nothing, except that it was a MM-romance. Truth in the Dark is a book that surprised me in many ways. But after finding it, I knew I needed to take this opportunity to talk about one of my favorite standalones that I read this year. I’m not sure I’ll manage to do this meme every week, since I rarely read standalones. I am a fairly new Amy Lane fan and this little gem has persuaded me to read all of her books! This is a story I will never forget and will definitely reread! This is going on my “best of the best” shelf.Standalone Sunday was created by the lovely Megan a chance to talk about your favorite standalone books (which is, books that aren’t part of a series). I love fantasy stories, but this was so emotional, moving, painful and absolutely lovely. I don’t want to give away any of the story, but I will say it was so much more than I was expecting. But at the end of this year Naef will have to perform ‘one regrettable task”. Like the blurb states his sister’s fiancee brother who is living under a curse offers his sanctuary and companionship for a year. more mented by people in his village and his only support is his mother and sister. Naef lives in a small fishing town, he as born disfigured. The story captured me and I was glued to my chair.

Review 2: THIS WAS AMAZING! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!I read this book in one sitting, once I started I couldn’t stop. I did like the fact that times each of them was both the beauty and the beast but as I said I couldn't connect with the characters.

I did like this variant with Naef and Aerie-Smith, it was a bit different and I found it interesting but I couldn't find an emotional connection with the characters. The tale was well written but for me it was lacking something. Review 1: I have a weird fascination with retold fairy tales and have read many different versions of them including a lot of variants of Beauty and the Beast.
